GOODBYE UNCLE TONY

I have been in Marlborough for the last few days attending the funeral of my Godfather Uncle Tony McDonald.
Tony was the last of the 'Old Brigade' of my father's siblings. He was 83 and had lived all his life in and around Blenheim. St Mary's Catholic church was full of friends and relatives attesting to a life well lived and one which earned a lot of respect from the community. He was a nice and gentle man who worked hard and contributed back to society where and when he could. I have very happy memories of spending school holidays with my uncle and aunt and will miss him.

Yes, we are now at an age when friends and family start 'dropping off'. It makes you think when at the farewell of these people 'what will I have contributed?'
I don't mean that we all have to have been Nobel Peace Prize winners but, it is nice to think that we will be fondly remembered. Big achievements are not the most important thing. Ethics and integrity (with or without the religious trappings) are the best legacy. I am proud to say that my best friends have these qualities and I hope that they think the same of me.

It hurts me to have to admit this, but we all have huge respect for you.

I've just been way, way in the future to your funeral, Comeinyourpants. Believe me, you have made this world a better place with your presence.

Bill. Did they play Richard's interpretation of Sally Goodin as I asked?

You know Richard (of RBB), too much wine over a long period - we tried to get him to play it, but he kept on about wanting to find some lemonade for his Chateaux something or other. In the end we got Mike to sing the "Combine Harvester" song. It went down a treat. He followed it up with "I'm in Love with my Mother". He should have known when to stop. I should have gone into the future and seen that coming.

Oh. Pity that Richard couldn't play Sally Goodin. I just thought that if I had to suffer so should everyone else.

Don't worry, The Combine Harvester Song won't let you down.
