He is right though as Maori have incorporated the rock formations at Whangarei Heads into their legends giving the rocks names, personalities and histories. The most famous is Mount Manaia.
But there are others around the bays that are very interesting.

Breathtaking. Do people climb them?
Yes but the very top of the Manaia ones are considered sacred and climbing is forbidden. There are tracks right up to the boulders though. The views are outstanding.
I like the way older cultures naintain thier sense of the spiritual.
