PULLING THE PIN

 I started a row on Facebook yesterday.

On one of the local Neighbourly pages a woman posted notification of an upcoming Holocaust exhibition at Waitangi.

This will be a commemoration of the 1.5 million Jewish children killed by Nazis during World War II. 
The Children's Holocaust Memorial, created by a Wellington school over a period of more than 10 years, was also designed to remember the uncounted thousands of Romani children, children with disabilities, Polish children and children in the occupied Soviet Union also killed by the Nazis and their collaborators.
In 2008 principal Justine Hitchcock and students at Moriah College, a Jewish school in Wellington, started collecting buttons in an attempt to illustrate the vast number of children killed between 1939 and 1945. Each of the 1.5 million buttons they collected from around the world represents one child.

I will see if I can get to this if Hone Harawera and his Highwaymen don't block the access road to Waitangi.

The first commenter to this post was a woman - let's call her Ima Fuckingidiot - in a rather incomprehensible rant said something like:

"This is still happening around the world and here with the government taking away our freedom.."

Or something like that. Facebook has disabled access to the comments after a bit of a row - instigated by yours truly - so I can't copy and paste exactly what she said, what I replied and what a host of other commenters came on board to say.

I said something along the lines of:

The Holocaust was a horrible happening that should never be denigrated  and demeaned by comparing mass murder with health and safety regulations. Your comment (Ima Fuckingidiot) reminds me of that idiot Marjorie Taylor Greene drawing comparisons between the Holocaust and mask wearing mandates ..."

For those who've been buried under a rock for the last year Marjorie Taylor Greene is an unhinged Republican Congresswoman who is right wing and a QAnon supporter. 

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, during an interview on a conservative podcast this week, compared House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's decision to continue to require members of the House to wear masks on the chamber floor to steps the Nazis took to control the Jewish population during the Holocaust.
Greene, in a conversation with the Christian Broadcasting Network's David Brody Real America's Voice TV show "The Water Cooler," attacked Pelosi and accused her of being a hypocrite for asking GOP members to prove they have all been vaccinated before allowing members to be in the House chamber without a mask.
"You know, we can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany," Greene said. "And this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about."


Jewish groups were quick to condemn Greene's remarks.
"You can never compare health-related restrictions with yellow stars gas chambers and other Nazi atrocities. Such comparisons demean the Holocaust and contaminate American political speech," the American Jewish Congress said in a tweet in response to Greene's comments. "Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene must immediately retract and apologize."

The commenters - some good and some crazy either took my side and agreed that Ima Fuckingidiot needs to study some history, or agreed with Ima Fuckingidiot and ranted and raved about the governments attack on their freedom and about Covid-19 conspiracies. Scary really. It's sad that we have people in our society and particularly in our country who are so stupid and easily coerced by conspiracy theory groups like QAnon and self-serving church groups like the Destiny Church and Robert ...... sorry.... and Robert the Apathetic Sinner may have an opinion on this.
