THE RULES

I bitched about the excessive use of rules in rugby in an earlier post. It was pique yes but some of the penalty rules are silly and are slowing the game down. Soon we'll have four hour bore-fests like the Americans do with their ridiculous football game.

Ignoring too many rules, especially the important ones can lead to chaos though.

Yesterday's philosophy cartoon kind of sums it up:

An axiom is not based on experience, we reach truth by inference.

Phew I just got that in with no comments to spare.

Tent Horn could not have said that better!

Axiom - a statement that everyone believes is true.
Inference - a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.

Seems to me that the first term applies to the Catholic church and not the second.

Seems to me that Robert picked up a phrase from someone - Trent? - and has been looking for somewhere, anywhere, to use it.
Why pick on my blog? I went to a lot of trouble copying and pasting that philosophy cartoon. Sheesh!

25 comments is a new record. This post should have gone on the Philosophical Curmudgeon's blog. He's going to be a bit miffed.
He'd probably say that jealousy is an emotion that arises in diverse circumstances and is experienced in phenomenologically diverse ways. In part because of this diversity, evaluations of jealous subjects tend to be conflicting and ambiguous.
If envy is the personal pain caused by the desire for the advantages of others, jealousy is the personal pain caused by the fear of losing one's advantages to others, or sharing one's advantages with others. Envy is covetous, jealousy is possessive.
No doubt he'd the quote Plato who said, in the 'Philebus': "Envious jealousy (φθόνος) is a state of mind or a disposition of the soul, in which pain is mixed with pleasure, because one affected by envious jeal- ousy is rejoicing at the misfortunes of those around him and being sad at their happi- ness."

Well, he does go on a bit.

TTFN.

I took some nice photos this morning when I went to Ocean Beach which is a few minutes away. After I have dinner (The Old Girl's delicious lentil soup from the freezer and some fresh French bread (no Scottish heart-stopping weird creations involved)) I might write a new post and show you. It's been a cracker day here (worthy of Mother Teresa - well, when she was younger and before that smoking habit she must have had ravaged her features). TTF .... oh, I said that before, mea culpa.
