THE RAILWAY CAR TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Geoff is staying with us this week and I've got to find ways of keeping the old guy amused.

For a few years now The Old Girl and I have talked about doing the Dargaville railway car excursion.

This is a self-drive trip on old railway lines crossing bridges, going through tunnels etc and is said to be quite the thing.

Well yesterday I tried to make a booking for today and, receiving no confirmation (there's that word again) on-line, I telephoned them this morning. Unfortunately the enterprise will be out of business for months as 500 metres of track was ripped up by Cyclone Gabrielle.

Sort of like this

Bugger!

Geoff doesn't play tennis, golf or snooker so that's out. He has hurt his back so climbing Mount Aubrey is out. Mount Manaia track is still closed due to cyclone damage.

On Monday we went to Ocean Beach to view the changes that the cyclones brought.

Millions of tonnes of sand has been washed away and much of the sand dunes have been carved away. It still looks beautiful but will take years to recover.

Today we might walk over to Smuggler's Bay to have a look. I've heard that much of the sand has been stripped away leaving exposed rock.

Hopefully it won't have changed too much.

I blame the smugglers. What a pity they didn't call it Nice and Responsible Guys' Bay.
