Cleaners arriving at St Mary of the Angels, a classic community building in Boulcott Street Wellington discovered a macabre scene.
Someone had erected a disturbing sculpture - an effigy really - of a dead man nailed to a wooden frame.
"We removed it and tossed it outside. Eeew!" said Ima Daly. "I sprayed it with disinfectant just in case. What's the world coming to?"
