I gave up on 'Mr Mower' as Richard would say and ordered an EGO battery line trimmer from on-line Mitre 10. They will be able to deliver that next week when we go to Level-3.

We don't have a lot of lawn - just a bit out the back and a scrappy strip below the deck out front so I figure that I'll be able to deal to the grass and the weeds with a line trimmer.

You got a Victa! probably with Aluminium body and Mr Mower in Petone or such could get it running again for less than $100!
It would cost me a lot more than that to get it to Petone and anyway, even under Level - 3, it is most likely impossible.
Anyway - we're in the country up here so I can always get some sheep - or cows to keep the grass down.
Mind you, that means that Richard won't come to visit. He's scared of cows.
